Yesterday we did a wonderful Medoc wine Tour with two guests of Villa Saint Simon from Oregon, USA. The day started as a sunny morning here in Blaye, we crossed the Gironde river in 20 minutes thanks to the ferry, then we drove to chateau Margaux and chateau Palmer in order to see the beauty of AOC Margaux. After seeing horses working we stopped at chateau Kirwan, 3rd classified growth 1855 for an hour guided tour. We saw the magnificient garden of the owners then we had a long explanation of the vine growing and wine making inside the cellars. The tour was conclued by a fantastic tasting of two wines: Chateau Kirwan 2008 and Les charmes de Kirwan 2008 ( second label of the Chateau). Our guests now do understand what a great french wine is and the impact of the climate and the soil on producing a bottle of wine!
Then, we had lunch (a french 3 courses meal with a bottle of wine) in a new Terroir Restaurant in Sain Julien town, mainly known by winemakers, fresh food is the key word and products are only from local growers.
2:30 p.m was the discovery of Chateau Branaire-Ducru a 4th classified chateau, fronting the famous chateau Beychevelle in the AOC Saint Julien. An amazing moment, we saw the state of the art equiment to produce wine. Gravity entrance system for the harvest and an efficient tankroom. At the end of the tour we tasted Chateau Branaire Ducru 2007 and Duluc 2006 (second label of the chateau). There is only one word to describe it: Unforgettable!
To finish the day we took the ferry to go back to Blaye under a summer day!
This is a classic day for our guests!
Once again we heard from our guests how grateful they are that they could go on a guided tour where they learnt so much more about the Bordeaux, wines and the region that they never had experience if they had travelled on their own.
We hope this little taste of our tours inspires you to join us soon.
